Kidney failure is a condition that can have many causes, but the final outcome is more or less always the same. Whatever the underlying disease, the main damage is always done to the small functional units of the kidneys called "nephrons" which are, amongst other things, responsible for blood filtration. The kidney itself has a great reserve capacity and continues to function normally until more than two thirds of its functional units "nephrons" are destroyed.
How recognise kidney disease ?
The incidence of chronic kidney failure increases with age. This is one of the most important causes of death in dogs and especially in cats. As the problem can progress quite slowly, signs are often ignored as they occur gradually and are easy to miss in the earlier stages. This is why you should look for that might imply your pet has kidney problems : - Poor appetite - Increased drinking and excessive thirst - Loss of weight - Increased urination - Vomiting (more common in dogs, not as common in cats) - Mouth ulcers - Weakness and lethargy
Can Ipakitine be used together with renal diets?
Yes – Renal diets include decreased phosphate concentration. Nevertheless, in many cases, the phosphate intake should be restricted even more. This is why phosphate binders are recommended to prevent absorption of part of the phosphates still present in the food.
Ipakitine is an effective and palatable phosphate binder, which can be used alone or in combination with renal diets. It is the only phosphate binder specifically developed for cats and dogs
